A new series of marbled compositions. Minimal clusters of color forms a central body fragment that aims to explore and synthesize the essence of the enigmatic complexity of the marbled papers patterns.
Elemental organic shapes that originates from interaction of fluid dynamics and chemical reactions, are captured from liquid surface in a sheet of paper using same techniques, tools and some of the materials used in the production of the early marbled papers, during the last centuries.
The marbled design composition depicted in this work is a traditional marbled paper pattern known as the Tiger Eye. Here applied over a “French Shell” pattern. The French Shell effect is achieved by adding a drop of olive oil to the paint. The oil causes the typical light-shaded outer ‘shell’ and makes the color to become darker toward the center of the paint drop. The Tiger Eye paint is applied on top of the Shell color. The Tiger Eye effect is achieved by chemical reaction with Alum, Potash and the black paint. A few drops of a saturated solution from each chemical is added to the black paint until the eye effect is obtained. Ox gall and water is also added to the paint to fine tune the effect.
